Yoga Studios – Tried, Tested & Approved!

Looking to start your yoga journey but unsure where to begin? Some are tempted to try out a yoga class at your typical gyms, since it is under your gym membership anyway and trying out classes do not cost you the extra moolah. Others are overwhelmed by the sheer number of yoga studios on our tiny island. How do you know which ones are worth your money (and time)? Our undercover yogis share their experience with two yoga studios in Singapore and here are their verdicts.

Who are they?
Established in 2015, this home-concept yoga studio is opened by friends Sandra Riley Tang (of local band group The Sam Willows) and Paalu; also the first of its kind in Singapore.

What’s so special?
There is a plethora of studios out there but what truly differentiates this studio from the rest? Walking in for the first time in the studio, I was greeted by a friendly yogi at the reception who welcomed me warmly and instantly made me feel at home in their cozy studio. There are no lockers at all, but no one seems to be too concerned.

The Yoga Co. takes pride in their small classes (not more than 15 per class) and their slightly different approach to yoga, strength and beauty. Unlike most commercialized studios or gyms where you are dumped into a class of 20-30 students, you get more personalized attention and guidance in a small group. Besides traditional yoga classes, there are special classes dedicated to arm inversions and balances, as well as core classes to help build up your strength. Their signature class is the Triple Threat Bootcamp, which comprises yoga (flow-style), calisthenics and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) work out. (Trust me, it IS intense but you feel soooo good after the class.)

My Experience
Having very minimal knowledge and background in yoga, I entered my first class feeling unconfident and worried. It was a flow mixed class and I was not sure what to expect or what I was in for. The class turned out to be quite intense for a newbie like me, but the teacher provided lots of options, which worked out great for me (and the other students too, of course). Even in a mixed level class, we are always encouraged to try to move out of our comfort zones to progress into inversions and poses. There is also a great emphasis on the correct techniques and alignment. All I had to do was to listen and adjust myself accordingly, and if I couldn’t, the teacher would come around to help.

One year into my membership with them, I am still greeted with the same warmth and enthusiasm with every visit. I have even plucked up enough courage to try the arm inversion and balance class and my alignment has improved greatly from when I first started. The teachers are always friendly and approachable, offering advice and encouragement without any restraint.

In general, I am very satisfied with my experience at The Yoga Co. Aside from the very pretty and well-stocked bathrooms and changing area, the motivation that keeps me coming back is the constant encouragement from teachers and staff of The Yoga Co. They truly embody what yoga is all about – a community; a family.

Final Verdict:
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner of yoga, this studio has classes to cater to your level of practice. Regardless of my proficiency in yoga, I always walk out of a class feeling like I had a great workout and a good stretch. Their packages are a little bit on the high end, but you get a good tradeoff with the small class size, cozy studio, great teachers and comfortable amenities. Definitely worth the value (and perspiration)!

Who are they?
A boutique yoga studio that specializes in Hot Yoga in 2 centralised areas in Singapore, Hom Yoga is positioned to be a clean and exclusive yoga mecca for city dwellers of all ages. It also offers a wide range of classes with a dense timetable, so you can easily find a yoga class to suit your timing and availability.

What’s so special?
Instead of trying to do everything, Hom specialises in Hot Yoga, with its studios equipped to make the experience of hot yoga comfortable for all, even newbies. I also heard they use eco-friendly products and a low energy consumption heating system for their hot studios. One up for the environment!

My Experience
Upon stepping into the Orchard Central studio, I was instantly attracted to the clean and light-filled environment with windows extending from the floor to the ceiling. The receptionist was chirpy and friendly, further adding to the light-hearted and welcoming mood the studio exudes. There were more than 10 hot showers, I believe catering to the large group of students after a steamy yoga practice.

The first class I had attended was Hot Hatha, which the receptionist highly recommended after finding out I was a beginner. The class was essentially a hot yoga class comprising 26 yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises, all within 60 minutes. Despite the huge class of 30, the yoga teacher was conscientious in single-handedly correcting postures, demonstrating the right techniques and giving tips on how to improve. She also gave several options to cater to all the varied levels within the class. I felt that this was highly commendable, and I was thankful for the personalized attention. All in all, the class was challenging for a first-timer in a hot yoga class, but I was glad it gave me a full body workout, and a good stretch.

I tried several other classes after that, and I conclude my experience to be the same: The workout was challenging but not beyond me, especially with the personalized attention from the friendly yoga teachers.

Final Verdict
I enjoy my Yoga classes at Hom, even after 3 years with them. The environment is welcoming and the staffs friendly. The package price is a little hefty compared to the other studios in Singapore, but hey, you pay for quality.
